We are not working on new words this week. Because there will not be an assessment at the end of the week, we opted to skip the sight word homework this week as well (we sent a math sheet home instead on Tuesday). New Word Work words will come home on Thursday, April 25th.
One more note about Word Work- our assessment will look a little different next week. To help prepare the kids for third grade, we plan to adopt a format similar to the one the third grade teachers at Woodland use for weekly assessments. The kids will write the 'headers' (the bold print patterns, rules, or categories) on the test paper, and when we give them a word to spell, they need to spell it correctly in the column where it 'fits' (as practiced with our word sorts). The first few times we administer the assessment under this model, we will be sure to provide lots of guidance so the kids can get the routine down. You can help at home by continuing to have your children sort their words throughout the week and talk with them about the pattern or 'rule' that differentiates the groups. Thanks for your continued support! We have been working on contractions in class, and today the kids all became surgeons for the day! Their patients were word pairs that needed to be joined together. Some letters needed to be removed, and an apostrophe went in as the stitches for the extracted letters. Great job!
What surprising weather this week! We were glad the kids got a chance to play in the fresh snow at recess today. A group of kids worked hard to build a special treat right outside our window. Thanks, Friends!
We have been learning about balance and motion in science. Today, the kids made a special balance game. The challenge is to see how many nails they can balance on the head of one nail. The student record in our room so far is 6!
Congratulations! Our class' name was randomly drawn, and we won the SUBstantial Award! The reward is a free sandwich, compliments of Jimmy Johns, and juice, chips and cookies will be provided by Mrs. Beckler. The kids will have this special lunch on Friday during our normal lunch time. We have talked with the kids, and they know that if they would like to supplement their lunch with something purchased in the cafeteria or something from home, they have the option to do so. Congratulations, kids! |
