Today we learned about why most pumpkins are orange and conducted an investigation related to one large class pumpkin! We made estimates, predictions and practiced measuring with unifix cubes. Tomorrow is our Fall party, from 3:00-3:30. If you volunteered to help, please plan to go to the room/space noted on the form we sent home last week after you check in at the front of the building. The kids will move from room to room, so no matter where you have been assigned to work, you WILL see your child during the party! :-) Please note: children are not allowed to wear costumes to school tomorrow. Thank you!

To celebrate the nearly $19,000.00 our students and families raised for our PTO, all students who raised $100.00 or more participated in the Run of Champions this afternoon, running a lap through the halls of Woodland with our principal, Mr. Nelson. The run ended in the gym, where we all got to watch as the top fundraising students took turns making Mr. Nelson a HUMAN SUNDAE! It was a super fun day, and we are so very grateful for all the generosity of our families! Hi Everyone! We are busy as usual in kindergarten! We are wrapping up our reading unit on main idea and details, studying the letter "Ss", rhyming words and blending sounds to make words and working on our writing and how we hold a pencil! We are also moving on from our first unit of math (numbers to 5 and patterns) and in to our second unit-a blue note for parents will come home soon sharing what we will work on in unit 2. Check out the pictures below to see the kids working on writing/holding a pencil, dancing along with our guest reader, reading their Time for Kids magazines and just having fun! We have had a few questions lately that many of you may be asking, so we are hoping to help clarify some items with a mini FAQ post. :) When is the Halloween Party? Our Halloween/Fall Party is from 3:00-3:40 on Wednesday, October 31st, during the school day. Can I help at the party? Of course! If you haven't signed up to help yet, please email Scott Lund or Jody Levy to let us know, and we will get you on our volunteer list! When will I know what I am doing at/for the party? We will send notes home with students whose parents/guardians signed up to help either at the party or as shoppers by this Friday, the 26th. There will be a brief description of your station, and unless it is on the form, you will not need to worry about bringing or preparing anything-just show up on party day and help in your assigned space. What are the community dinners? Once a month, our PTO coordinates a community dinner at a local restaurant. Reminders will always come home the day of the event, but it is also advertised through our Peachjar emails. (there is a button link to sign up for Peachjar on our page if you are not signed up yet). No one is required to attend, but the restaurants do give a portion of their proceeds to our PTO, and it is fun to see other Woodland students, staff and families outside of school! What is Turkey Bingo? This is a PTO sponsored community event. We will have bingo cards for sale, a fun assortment of prizes, and there will be some dinner options for families. This year, Turkey Bingo will be at Woodland on Friday, November 9 from 5:30-8:00 PM. How can I help at Turkey Bingo? Here is the link to sign up and help: www.signupgenius.com/go/5080c4aaba72ba0f85-turkey2 What is the Silent Auction? The Silent Auction runs in conjunction with Turkey Bingo, on Friday November 9th. Classrooms and volunteers assemble baskets with donated items that people can bid on. The highest bids at the end of the auction will be notified, and the proceeds go to our PTO. What should I donate for the class Silent Auction basket? This year, our room theme is PATTERNS. You can donate ANYTHING with a pattern on it or in it. A gift card with a pattern, striped socks, board games with a pattern of some kind...get creative and have fun! Can I donate other items for the Silent Auction? Of course! You can send them in with your child, and include a note so we can pass it on to the coordinator of the Silent Auction. Tickets to sporting events, passes to local businesses, handmade items...you name it! We welcome any and all donations. Thank you! This Friday, October 26, is school picture day! Our photos will be taken before lunch. An order form and envelope will come home this evening (Wednesday), but you can order online at www.mylifetouch.com.
Our picture ID is MI218336T0 (after the M is letter I, after the T is the number 0). You can purchase photo packages for multiple family members while on the site, and if you order online, you will not need to send your child to school with any extra papers on Friday! There are also many background and package options online-you can look around for some good deals! Today we talked about Unity Day, what bullying looks like and how to be assertive. We met with our third grade buddy classes (Ms. Savitt and Ms. Murphy) and spent time reading with each other, building relationships. We also had a number of amazing high school volunteers today from Champlin Park High School! We hope you all enjoy the long weekend, and look forward to seeing everyone again on Monday! We have been BUSY in kindergarten! (What's new, right?) We have had a couple of guest readers in our room, and the kids LOVED it! *If you would ever like to pop in as a guest reader, please connect with us and we will set something up! We have been learning more math games, and practicing writing our numbers to 5 the 'school way'. We have also started our reading curriculum! Over the next 4 weeks, we will learn about identifying main idea and details in pictures, passages, stories and non-fiction books. You can support this at home by talking with your kids about the books you read together: "What was the main idea (the big idea) of what we read?", "How do you know?", "What are some details from what we read?", "Do the details support the main idea?" In phonics, we are working on rhyming, the short /a/ sound and the /m/ sound. We are also learning about blending sounds to make words. Hi everyone! We have sent a few Remind messages home this evening (if you are not signed up yet, please click on the button link to the right). This is a busy week with library, the start of a new month, conferences coming up and the start of the Butterbraid sales! Fun Run donations are being accepted through the end of this week, and if you haven't registered online yet, you can click the other button link to the right. ;-) Peachjar (the third button link on the right) is the online tool our building uses to send information from the school, district and community home electronically. Please make sure to sign up if you haven't yet! Today, we had a chance to work and explore with whiteboards! The kids were all excited and very proud of their work. (Pictures will be posted a bit later this evening). We are also in the process of preparing the big fish tank for our goldfish! The kids are helping Mr. Lund get everything ready. We will be sure to post pictures when the fish arrive! In the classroom, we are talking about the importance of Acting with Leadership this week. Ask your child what that might look or sound like! |
