As our students improve their reading fluency, we change gears and turn our focus to their understanding of what they have read (reading comprehension). One way to see if your child understands what they have read is to have him or her write a summary of the story or passage. In class, we have taught three pre-writing strategies to help the kids organize their thoughts prior to writing an official summary. (The summary would include the details from their prewriting as well as a topic and concluding sentence.) Please click on this link to view a 'cheat sheet' explaining the three strategies. (We will also include a link on our "Parent Links" page.)
If your child writes a summary at home, feel free to send it in for us to celebrate their hard work! As we are all getting more familiar with our Word Work routines, we felt it was time to reassess the students' understanding and use of spelling patterns to ensure they are in the group that best fits their needs. As a result, we will not have Word Work words this week, and it is possible your child may bring home a different colored list on Friday. Thanks for your support, and have a great week!
