Today was a fun-filled day! We completed a pumpkin exploration where the kids made predictions and documented their findings about a real pumpkin. We have been learning about pumpkins throughout the week, and the kids know a great poem/song about 5 Little Pumpkins-have them share it with you! We also had our Fall Party this afternoon. Thank you to all the parents and friends of the classroom that helped out-the kids had a blast! Have a great evening, and if you will be headed out trick-or-treating, we hope you stay warm and dry! Tomorrow is PAJAMA DAY! Also, please note that the Thursday math homework is not due until MONDAY. :-)

We know many of the children are looking forward to Halloween this evening! We are offering some extra credit work for anyone who is interested. After collecting candy tonight, have your child sort his or her candy on the floor or a table according to whatever attributes (brand, filling, size, first letter...) they like, and make it into a life-size graph (no graph paper needed). After the sorting, please take a picture of your child with his or her graph and send it in to school when you have completed the activity. *It is easiest if you can send the photo via the Remind app or email it to Mrs. Levy at [email protected]. If your child does not collect candy on Halloween, you can have him or her sort something else in the house (buttons, socks, cans of soup...) and take a photograph of his or her work. Graphing is a skill the kids will work on throughout their academic careers, and opportunities to make and talk about graphs will enhance their learning both at home and at school. Please click HERE to see what our students have done in the past! Today we celebrated Unity Day at Woodland. Mrs. Howieson's third graders came to our room to work on a project with our kindergartners, and when they finished, the kids all read together for a bit. It was fun to work with the big kids! Friday is Picture Day! You may have received emails with package information, but you can go to THIS LINK to see the web address and codes needed to order online. Paper order forms went home with your children today, as well. Finally, speaking from experience, ordering from a smartphone was a little challenging-if you are able, you may find it easier to order form a computer or laptop. We had a fun, short week! In addition to working on identifying main idea and supporting details, we have continued practicing rhyming words and discussing the differences between fiction and non-fiction books. We also talked more about autumn and the changes we can observe during this season. Thank you to everyone who helped collect and send in leaves. We had a great variety to work with! The kids made Leaf Rubbings and after reading "Leaf Man" by Lois Elhert, the kids made their own leaf people-they are so creative! Because the Lund class tied for second place in their fundraising efforts for Woodland, they earned extra recess AND a popcorn party! The Lund class generously shared the party with the Levy kids, and they all had a great time snacking on popcorn while making their leaf people. Next week, we will work with the letter Ss and continue to work on making words together. We will also learn more about identifying main idea and details, and we will discuss cooperation and unity. Woodland will celebrate Unity Day on October 23, and kids are invited to wear orange to show unity and help raise awareness about bullying. We have had a great week in kindergarten! This week, we began some of our phonics instruction, studying the school way to make upper and lower class Mm, the sound it makes and listing all the words we can think of that begin with "Mm". We also started working on our first reading unit, where we are learning about finding the main idea and identifying details. While looking for main idea and details, we have also been talking about what makes a book fiction (stories/made-up) or non-fiction (facts). In math, we are learning some new games during our "workplace" time. One that we worked on this week is called "Spill 5 Beans". The kids cooperated with each other in groups of two, taking turns and helping each other learn and remember the rules of the game. We practiced even MORE cooperation by learning a new Daily Five rotation, Read to Someone. The kids sit with a partner and read the words or pictures or retell the story. They did an excellent job! We are very lucky to have a variety of elementary, middle school, high school AND college volunteers visit our classroom! They help with breakfast time, listen to kids read, practice skills with small groups and help us with jobs around the classroom. Two college students, in particular, are Miss Millette and Miss Hutchens. They are both studying to be teachers, getting some observation hours in, and they are BOTH former L2 first and second grade students! Thank you to all the families who helped us meet our fundraising goal of over $20,000.00 for our school's PTO through the Fun Run! We celebrated with the Run of Champions and by SLIMING our principal, Mr. Nelson! Mr. Lund's class tied for second place as the top fundraisers, so they have earned a popcorn party-to be awarded soon! The upcoming week will be a busy one! Our last day of conferences is on Monday, we will continue our work on letter Mm and add in letter Aa. Tuesday is our Woodland Community dinner at Café Zupas in Maple Grove, and there will be NO SCHOOL on Thursday or Friday. Hi Everyone!
As we have been preparing for conferences, it has been very busy! The children are excited for you to see samples of their work! This week and next, we will be working with the letters Mm and Aa. We will list words that start with the letters (focusing on the short vowel sound for "a"), we will work on the 'school way' to write the letters and we will even start making rhyming words that end in -am. We are working on our first social studies unit, which focuses on families and school. We will meet "Puppy" this week-he is a puppet that helps us teach our social-emotional curriculum, and we will learn about self-regulation. Specifically, the lessons will teach learning to listen, focusing attention, following directions, self-talk for staying on task, and being assertive. We look forward to seeing you all at conferences soon! We had a great afternoon at Eidem Farm last Thursday! With the help of our wonderful chaperones, the children learned what life was like on a family farm in Brooklyn Park over 100 years ago. They seemed most surprised by the lack of televisions! The kids learned about planting potatoes, pumping water, caring for farm animals, washing and drying clothes, entertaining and more. Enjoy the photos that our chaperones shared! Thank you for a wonderful day! |
