We know many of the children are looking forward to Halloween this evening! We are offering some extra credit work for anyone who is interested. After collecting candy tonight, have your child sort his or her candy on the floor or a table according to whatever attributes (brand, filling, size, first letter...) they like, and make it into a life-size graph (no graph paper needed). After the sorting, please take a picture of your child with his or her graph and send it in to school when you have completed the activity. *It is easiest if you can send the photo via the Remind app or email it to Mrs. Levy at [email protected]. If your child does not collect candy on Halloween, you can have him or her sort something else in the house (buttons, socks, cans of soup...) and take a photograph of his or her work. Graphing is a skill the kids will work on throughout their academic careers, and opportunities to make and talk about graphs will enhance their learning both at home and at school. Please click HERE to see what our students have done in the past!

Picture day is TOMORROW! (Friday, October 28, 2017). Order forms went home with Wednesday mail, but you can also order online at https://my.lifetouch.com/mylifetouch/#/
The Picture Day/Portrait ID is: MI217336Y0 Online Picture Day orders will ONLY be accepted up to 48 hours after picture day (Sunday). We are scheduled for pictures BEFORE lunch, recess and specialists, and we will do everything we can to keep your kids looking picture perfect! While learning to identify the main idea, we read a nonfiction book about germs and how to stay healthy. Following the book, we did a small science experiment to see how much handwashing actually impacts the amount of germs on our hands. It was both gross and cool, all at the same time! Today we also made leaf rubbings (thanks to all the friends who collected leaves for our work!), and learned a new song. "Ram Sam Sam", that reinforces three of the sounds we have worked on in class (Mm, Aa and Ss). Today was a day full of community building and fun! We had a new high school helper, Miss Maleeya, in addition to our college helper, Miss Sarah today. They helped us with a lot, including making a bark rubbing of our class tree and measuring the circumference of our tree! Ms. Thompson's third graders joined us for some "Buddy time ", and we showed the big kids how we read to a partner. We learned about mixing cement and created 2 class stepping stones to be added to our WET Lab. We also posed for a special all-school photo (taken by a photographer who used a drone to get the picture!), then went to watch as the top Fun Run earning class and the top individual fundraising students (4 from our room!) attempted to dunk Mrs. Beckler in the dunk tank! On top of ALL of that, the kids have been doing GREAT in music and physical education, almost always earning top daily point scores, and even earning ABOVE the typical "great job" points! *A green card in music means everyone was on task and working hard... ORANGE means they were OUTSTANDING. In PE, kids work to earn up to five points each visit, but on RARE occasions, they can earn six points. Enjoy the long weekend with your hardworking kiddos! Butterbraid orders went home about a week ago. If your child sold any, please be sure to send in the order form and payments(s) tomorrow, 10/18. Thank you!
Mr. Lund spent time "fishing" over the weekend and retrieved all 20 of our goldfish (many of whom are orange) from their summer home in his pond. The kids helped prepare the tank for their homecoming, and it was an exciting day to welcome them into our class! Speaking of orange...Woodland is celebrating Unity Day (a day where we devote ourselves to being upstanders/standing up to bullies and not accepting such behavior) this Wednesday, October 18th. To show our unity as a school, Mrs. Beckler requests that we all try to wear orange this Wednesday. A very special all-school photo will be taken at the end of the day to celebrate our message! Thank you all for coming in to conferences to talk with us about your children! We have one last day/night of conferences tomorrow, and the Book Fair will be open to all during conference hours. Last Friday, we got in a little science! We talked about living and non-living things, then turned our focus to trees. We read about how some trees change throughout the year, then selected our 'class tree' that we will sketch each season to note the changes. We will do more work with trees over the next few weeks. Today we started our reading and phonics curriculum instruction and even met with some of our small reading groups! This week, we will focus on the letters Aa and Mm. In language arts, we will spend three weeks digging into the skill of identifying main idea and details. Many more families signed up for Remind-THANK YOU! Remember, it is as simple as texting the message "@lundan" (no quotation marks) to the number 81010. Once you are in, you can even send messages to other parents in the class for play dates, parties and more! Thank you to everyone who signed up and donated to Woodland for the Fun Run...THE LUND CLASS IS CURRENTLY IN SECOND PLACE! With a classroom goal of $1,500.00, we are only about $350.00 from both meeting the goal, earning a popcorn party AND EARNING THE CHANCE TO BE THE CLASS TO DUNK MRS. BECKLER IN THE DUNK TANK NEXT WEEK! We can do this-we have one more day!
Today the children had a variety of opportunities to work with their classmates! We began our day by combining both classrooms (Lund and Levy kids) at one group area for our Morning Meeting. Prior to today, we always did our Morning Meetings separately, then joined together for the rest of our day. The kids did a great job listening to each other and greeting everyone! We also started working on building our stamina for Read to Someone (partner reading) for the first time today. We paired the children up after explaining (and modeling) the expectations, and they did a PHENOMENAL job! We look forward to practicing more over the next few weeks, building up to about 10 minutes. Finally, Mrs. Moe stopped by for her final lesson with our students. The kids worked in teams of two to build the highest tower they could with only two pieces of paper (no glue or tape allowed!). It was great to see how the kids shared their ideas and worked together! Conferences started this morning, and will take place again on Thursday and next Tuesday. The Book Fair is set up in the front of the building during conference hours, and there are lots of fun books to look at/purchase! THE FUN RUN ONLINE FUNDRAISER CLOSES IN TWO DAYS...Both of our rooms are in the top 10, but with a few more kids signed up and a few more donations, we could potentially take first place! If you haven't signed up yet, please consider it, and forward the link to family and friends! https://www.thegetmovincrew.com/ Thank you!!! |
