Hopefully you are all recovering from a wonderful Thanksgiving spent with the people you love. We are happy to share new photos with you at our Photo Gallery. There are captions on the bottom of many of the photos in case your child isn't there to fill in the blanks. :-)
This week (November 29-December 3) we will attend out first of three Eagle Celebrations with the whole school. We are also wrapping up the first trimester, with report card marking on Friday, December 3rd (no school for students). This is a great time to reflect on how far your child has come since the first weeks of school. Report cards will come home on Wednesday, December 8th. Please go over the report with your child and take a moment to both celebrate their accomplishments and make goals for the upcoming trimester.

Picture it, moms and dads...You are a first grade student at Woodland Elementary. You have been waiting all morning for recess. The lunchroom ESPs have dismissed you from the cafeteria, and this is the scene: With all that is going on around you, you still manage to find your way to your locker. Now...do YOU know which snowpants are yours?? Please help your child pass the test by clearly labeling all of his or her winter gear. We have even seen parents use puffy fabric paint to write their children's initials on the heels of their boots! So many items are lost on a daily basis in a school of our size, and labeling items will make it so much easier to get things back to their owners. Thank you for your help! ***An important message/request from the Woodland Office: Please put student’s names on all winter apparel, lunch boxes, and hooded sweatshirts. Also please ask your children to be more responsible with their belongings. Responsibility is one of our Eagle Pride Pillars! We will put out all lost and found items on tables the last week before winter break so parents who are in the building for parties, waffle breakfast, or the sing-a-long can look at what we have collected. Anything left will be donated.
Turkey Bingo will take place at Woodland Elementary Friday, November 12th! Thank you to everyone who donated items and money for our classroom basket. You can see what we were able to put together in the photograph below. It will be available for bids at the Silent Auction, which will take place during Turkey Bingo. We used the monetary donations to buy some extra items-a fleece blanket, bug-repelling candle, mugs, and a few other things. We will be calling BINGO from 7-7:30 PM, and hope to see some of you as our winners!
As you all may know, homework completion is an expectation at Woodland. When homework is not returned, the children stay in during recess to complete any missing assignments. (Once they are done, they go out to recess.)
In an effort to help your child get the most recess time possible (oh, yes, AND to make sure they are establishing routines at home and continuing to improve their skills :)), we are dedicating this post to homework updates and clarification. DAILY EXPECTATIONS: Please help your child check planners and Take-Home Folders, read at least 10 minutes and record the time read on the class reading calendars, practice spelling words, practice Word Bird words and pik reading sheets until fluent. HOMEWORK SCHEDULE: In addition to the Daily Expectations, this homework is due the following day. Mondays-Fast Track Reading Folder* Tuesdays-Pink Reading Sheet Wednesdays-Math Sheet Thursdays-Math Sheet (This is our spelling test day, so look for a corrected spelling test in your child's folder.) Fridays-New Spelling Words and Word Bird Words *This week, (Monday, November 8th) we sent home 2 poems in the folder instead of the listed story. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused. Due to a copy shortage, we did not have the story ready in time to send home, but wanted to keep up the routine of sending something to read in the envelope. EXTRA HOMEWORK: There may be times that we send home an extra poem or math homework to reinforce what we are learning at school and/or to show you what we are up to. When this happens, we will try to make note of it in the childrens' planners, and we will remind them that they need to explain it to you. Your child may also have homework from Team Time. They will be responsible for communicating this to you, as it does not get written in their planners. Check it out! We will soon have an RSS feed so you can get a notice when there are new blog posts! (If you know how to add this, please e-mail Jody or Scott...we are having more trouble than we thought we would!) Friday, November 12, Woodland will be hosting our annual Turkey Bingo Night from 5:00-8:00 PM. Click on the words "Turkey Bingo" throughout this post to see the school flyer for the event. The silent auction will take place the same evening, and it is a fun way to raise money for our school. Last year, we raised almost $4,000.00 with our auction baskets! This year, our class is preparing a basket with the theme: Fishing Fun/Heading Up North. (Click on the theme to see the flyer we sent home.)
At the time of this post, we have 6 items for our basket (but no basket). We would love to proudly display an exciting basket for Turkey Bingo Night! Some ideas for donations might be fishing gear, sporting goods store gift cards, fishing tackle, blankets, movies to watch at the cabin, snacks, and anything else you can think of! As hinted at earlier, we also need a basket or container of some sort to hold all of our goodies. If you would like to contribute, but are unsure of what to send, you can send a monetary donation, and we will take all the money donated to Fleet Farm where we will purchase items to help fill the basket. As mentioned, the Silent Auction takes place on Turkey Bingo Night. Parents and family members can look at and bid on all the exciting baskets that will line the front halls of Woodland that evening. If you are the highest bidder, you can either pay for it and bring it home that evening, or if you leave early, you will get a phone call to set up a time to come in and pay for/pick up your basket. We can always use help with these fun school events. If you are able to volunteer some of your time that evening, please click here for a volunteer form. Thank you! This is a fun event, and we hope to see you there! |
