Next week, we will have three different lists. We will post photos of each list, and your child will be able to tell you which list is his or hers.

Friday, November 16th is Woodland's Annual Turkey Bingo and Silent Auction Event! There is information on the school website, adn the kids are already getting excited for the fun evening! We spent some time today planning our themes for our Silent Auction Baskets. The final decision was to have two baskets: "Minnesota Sports" and "Awesome Activities". Click HERE for a link to the flyer that we've sent home asking for help with our baskets. The money raised form the Silent Auction goes directly to our PTO, which in turn, directly supports Woodland ELementary. So, if you have any special connections for exciting additions to our baskets, please call in any favors and help us create the best baskets ever!
We are currently all still all working with the same words for spelling, but we will have leveled lists in the very near future! Our goal is to post the words each week, so you have one more location to find them. :-)
Tests are on Fridays (unless noted otherwise in our planners). We select ten words from the Word Work list and 5 words from the high frequency word list (the half pink sheet that comes home on Tuesdays). As you can see, the list is meant to be cut apart, and there are 3 categories for the sort: words with the short 'o' sound, words wiht the long 'o' sound, and 'oddballs'-words that do not fit into either category. This week's oddballs are some and come, because although they have an 'o' in them, the rule implies that they should have a long 'o' sound ("e" at the end of the word), but they do not. The kids have been using Tumblebooks, a reading program, at school for our "Listen to Reading" time during the reading block. They know how to access the site from a home computer, and we now have confirmation that it will work on iPads as well! If you go to the "Student Links" page on this site, you can find a link to Tumblebooks in our Reading Games section. Remember, the username is wdstu, and the password is books. From an iPad, after you enter the username and password, press "SUBMIT" (not GO). Next, in the same area (upper right corner), you can 'CHOOSE' iPad. It is possible that "English" will be in the choice box, but scroll down, and iPad should be an option. While we are on the topic of iPads and tablets, we have been meaning to reach out to all of you for some help. :-) We would love your input/reviews of any apps you have purchased/found for reading or math. PLEASE HELP US BY COMMENTING ON THIS BLOG ENTRY WITH READING OR MATH APPS YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE HELPFUL AND/OR FUN FOR YOUR CHILD, AND CHECK BACK EVERY SO OFTEN TO SEE WHAT HAS BEEN ADDED. Our hope is that keeping them all in the comment section will provide parents with a spot to check out if they are looking for some new learning applications. Additionally, it will help us because we are lucky enough to have 4 student iPads in our classroom, and with your input, we may be able to get new apps added to the room iPads for the kids. Thanks in advance for your assistance! Our Fall Party is quickly approaching! A few parents signed up to help at the party (October 31st from 3:00-3:45 PM) at Open House, but we need more help to make the party a huge success! The entire second grade hosts our party, so we have volunteers from each classroom, and there are a variety of activities for the kids to participate in. People who are already signed up will receive a note by Wednesday, the 24th about their activity. If you have not signed up and are available, please e-mail Jody at [email protected]. Thank you for your help!
Unity Day, sponsored by PACER, is a day where people show that they are united (in schools and communities) to work together and put an end to bullying. At Woodland, we celebrated our unity a day early, all wearing something orange-this explains the lei your child brought home-and joining together for an all-school photo and classroom teamwork activities. Our second graders all worked together to form the first letter "D" in "WD United" (WD stands for Woodland). Our first class read aloud story was Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, by Judy Blume. The kids enjoyed hearing all about Peter Hatcher, his brother Fudge, and his turtle, Dribble. Thank you to everyone who sent in egg cartons-we used them to make our very own "Dribbles" to help us remember the fun times we had listening to the story! We have more pictures of this activity posted in the photo gallery. |
