Hi Everyone!
We had a great week that went by VERY fast! We welcomed TWO new students to our room this week, Aiyden and Lorpu. The class has worked hard to help them learn our routines and make them feel like part of our classroom community. Thank you to the many families that were able to attend our Chillin' and Grillin' with Kindergarten event on Thursday evening. We had a great turnout, and it was fun to see the kids introducing their friends to their families! Also, thanks to the families that were able to come support their kids at the Fun Run. Everyone had a great time, and everyone worked VERY hard! In addition to your physical support, we would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to all the families who collected monetary donations for the Fun Run. Our building has exceeded the $20,000.00 goal! The money goes to our Woodland PTO, and you can learn more about what we do with that money by attending a PTO meeting or asking a PTO Board member at our SLICE OF WOODLAND event, THIS TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1st, from 6:30-7:30 PM in the Woodland cafeteria. Click HERE for more information! We hope to see you there! Our first field trip is set for THIS THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3rd. If you signed up to volunteer, please remember to bring a valid ID and check in at the office. Finally, one more important reminder/note. Fall goal-setting conferences are coming up! Please go to this link: https://www.ptcfast.com/schools/Woodland_Elementary_School to sign up for the dates and times that work for your family. Thank you so much for all you do to send us happy, healthy kids each day! We are so enjoying getting to know each and every one!

Hi Everyone! Our week is off to a great start! We have been improving our stamina when we read to self, we have been enjoying our math lessons and activities, and the kids are working on writing and identifying rhyming words. We went to the media center and every child participated in their first Universal Assessment today. Familiar school staff listened to our students read the letter names and recorded their results. We will use the information as a baseline and one of our pieces of data as we determine groups for reading. There will be a UA in January and May as well. Some reminders: *We visit the media center tomorrow-please send library books back with your children. *Chillin' and Grillin' with Kindergarten is THIS THURSDAY! If you have not ordered your baskets, please contact one of us right away, so we have enough food! *Fun Run***AT THE TIME OF THIS ENTRY, MR. LUND'S CLASS IS IN 3RD PLACE AND MRS. Students who raise $100.00 or more are eligible to participate in the Run of Champions, where they get to run a lap through the halls of Woodland while students cheer them on. Before we start-please remember SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS ARE DUE TODAY! We earn classroom rewards for dollars spent on book orders, and are VERY close to earning some cool books and items for the room! We will submit the order on Saturday morning. We continued our work on building stamina during Read to Self as well as during our writing. We also enjoyed seeing friends and family at the All School BBQ! Have a wonderful weekend! Hi Everyone! With the color days ending, we will probably start slowing down the blog posts to 2-3 times a week, and over time, our goal will be weekly updates. Yesterday, we worked on the "School Way" to hold a pencil when writing, and the kids worked really hard to create their 'birdie beaks' and practice writing. We also learned how to use shelf markers in the media center-next week, the kids will use shelf markers to find books all on their own! Today, we continued working on building our stamina during Read to Self (4 minutes!) and we have begun "Work on Words/Word Work" as well. During math, the kids learned about a new worklplace option: the geoboards. They enjoyed exploring with them as well as the polydrons and pattern blocks! Please remember that Scholastic Book Orders are due TOMORROW! Also, the All-School BBQ is tomorrow, and our class will eat at 11:40. Have a great evening! This was our LAST color day! We saved the most labor-intensive project for last, and the kids made ADORABLE monkey/Curious George hats where the monkey is holding a YELLOW banana! We also learned a song for the color yellow, listed things that are yellow and read some Curious George books. We practiced Read to Self this morning, and the kids made it to 3 minutes where everyone was engaged in their books the whole time-we are making good progress! With the end of our color days, we will be filling our time with more math, stamina building for our Daily Five routines and learning more about school and classroom routines and expectations. Never a dull moment! We will visit the media center tomorrow morning. Kids who bring their books back will be allowed to check out a new book. The All-School BBQ is THIS Friday! Click HERE for more information. Our class will eat at 11:40, and parents/family members are invited to join their children for lunch! Happy Monday! Today we discussed the color black, learned how to spell the color word and read "10 Black Dots" by Donald Crews. The kids made their own creations with some black dots, and thanks to the help of some high school volunteers, their work is already beautifully displayed in our hallway! In other exciting news, Mr. Lund moved the fish from their "Summer Home" in Champlin to their "Winter Home" in our classroom! The kids were very excited to see all the fish in the tank they helped set up! Tomorrow is YELLOW Day! Please be sure to read the post below this one about the Fun Run fundraiser! Our school's primary fundraiser, the Woodland Fun Run, will take place on September 27th. Our school fundraising goal is $20,000.00. Each student is encouraged to try and raise at least $50.00. Students who raise $100.00 or more are eligible to participate in the Run of Champions, where they get to run a lap through the halls of Woodland while students cheer them on. A collection envelope came home Friday, and you can collect donations of cash or check using the envelope. You can ALSO register online and share your link with family and friends so they can make online donations to our school! *Every child registered online will receive a small prize-no donations required! How Do I Register Online? Go to this link: www.getmovinfundhub.com Register as a parent and enter the school identifier 5d2f2781304da when asked. You will receive a follow-up email from FundHub with information about checking your child's fundraising status as well as how to share the link with family and friends. Thank you for your help, and we hope to see you at the Fun Run on the 27th! On Friday, we discussed the color white. We read "It Looked Like Spilt Milk", by Charles G. Shaw, and everyone got a 'cloud print' to look at and try to determine what it might be. Everyone's work will be combined to make a class book, available for viewing at our October conferences! We started working on a few more classroom routines as well as room organization with the kids as well. Everyone decorated their own name card for their table bins, and each child got a book bag and selected 3 books to keep inside. We learned about one of our Daily Five rotations, "Read to Self". We talked about what it should look and sound like and why we do it, then we practiced at our tables. Our goal is to read for 10-15 minutes in the classroom daily, and we will keep track of our times as we work on building our stamina to read to self. We had a tornado/severe weather drill on Friday, too. The kids did a great job showing they know what to do! Monday will be Black Day! Have a wonderful weekend! It was a very rainy Green Day! We learned a song about green as well as a turtle song, a frog song AND a song about a sneaky crocodile! The kids made turtles, and we learned that hard-shelled turtles always have 13 "scutes" on their shells! This morning, Mrs. Larson, our school counselor, introduced herself to our class and discussed what her role is in our building. In the afternoon, we practiced a Lock Down drill. We learned more about the Zones of Regulation as well as some tips for how to get ourselves centered, or 'back to green". We also introduced the "100 Club" to our class today. To become a member, the kids need to show us they can count to 100. They can join the club when they are ready, and we look forward to filling up over the course of the school year! September book orders came home today-please consider ordering wither with the flyer or online. There are many great books, at great prices, and we earn a LOT of fun books and rewards for our classroom with each dollar spent! (Clicking on THIS paragraph will bring you to our Scholastic information page!) Tomorrow is White Day! Today was a VERY busy day! Right after our Morning Meeting, we went to the media center to meet Mrs. Cobb, Mrs. Traeger and Ms. Tracy, learn about our library and have our FIRST book check-out of the year! The children can check out one book at a time, and we visit the media center every Wednesday for new books (please send the books back each Wednesday). We also learned a song about the color brown, read "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" by Eric Carle and made special Brown Bear crowns. Have your child sing the "Brown Bear" song to you tonight, using their crown as a reference! We also met with Mr. Nelson, our principal, in the cafeteria. He formally introduced himself to the kindergartners and talked to us about school expectations, what to do if kids are feeling unsafe/harassed/bullied and how to be a good friend. Tomorrow is GREEN day! Have a great evening! |
