The kids have been using Tumblebooks, a reading program, at school for our "Listen to Reading" time during the reading block. They know how to access the site from a home computer, and we now have confirmation that it will work on iPads as well! If you go to the "Student Links" page on this site, you can find a link to Tumblebooks in our Reading Games section. Remember, the username is wdstu, and the password is books. From an iPad, after you enter the username and password, press "SUBMIT" (not GO). Next, in the same area (upper right corner), you can 'CHOOSE' iPad. It is possible that "English" will be in the choice box, but scroll down, and iPad should be an option. While we are on the topic of iPads and tablets, we have been meaning to reach out to all of you for some help. :-) We would love your input/reviews of any apps you have purchased/found for reading or math. PLEASE HELP US BY COMMENTING ON THIS BLOG ENTRY WITH READING OR MATH APPS YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE HELPFUL AND/OR FUN FOR YOUR CHILD, AND CHECK BACK EVERY SO OFTEN TO SEE WHAT HAS BEEN ADDED. Our hope is that keeping them all in the comment section will provide parents with a spot to check out if they are looking for some new learning applications. Additionally, it will help us because we are lucky enough to have 4 student iPads in our classroom, and with your input, we may be able to get new apps added to the room iPads for the kids. Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Today is Woodland's All School BBQ! Our class will eat at 12:50, which is our normal lunch time. Please consider joining your child for lunch today (or any day). If you ever want to come to school to have lunch with your child, you are more than welcome. If you plan to purchase a school lunch, please send us an e-mail, so we can be sure to give the cooks an accurate lunch count. Thanks, and we hope to see you soon!
Hi Everyone-
We apologize for the lack of posts over the past month. Things have been going well in the classroom, and we have lots of new updates for you! Think Central: We sent home a small blue card with your child's ID information as well as their passwords. If you have misplaced the card, each child has a sticker with the same information inside their Take Home folders. After logging in, there are 3 choices-Things to Do, My Library, and My Test Scores. For this school year, the only choice we will be using with the students is "My Library". On "My Library", the children can explore four different 'books'. The "Enrich With Projects" link is an online workbook with challenge activities matched to the different learning objectives in each unit. These pages are not interactive-you would need to print them out before working on them. "iTools" is a fun option for using different online manipulatives and just practicing skills we are working on in the classroom. "Math Expressions Activity Book" is the online version of the workbook we use in class. We have completed book 1, but the kids could go back and review skills they have already learned. "Harcourt Mega Math" has a wide variety of games. After choosing one of the 6 main headings, there are many games within the heading to choose from. School Store: The school store will be open on Wednesdays, starting next week. Click on the word "School" for schedule information, and "Store" for rules/expectations. High Frequency Words: At conferences, we are sharing test results for your children's knowledge of high frequency words. At the time of testing, we only used the first 88 words. By the end of the year, the children should have at least 85% mastery of the entire list. You can click on "High Frequency Words" for the complete list, or find it any time on our Parent Links page. First Grade News: Don't forget, on the first Wednesday of each month, our grade level newsletter is posted on the school's website. We do not send a hard copy home (unless there is a parent request). The newsletter shares what we will be teaching each month as well as informational items and calendar dates. Thank you for checking in! Hopefully you are all recovering from a wonderful Thanksgiving spent with the people you love. We are happy to share new photos with you at our Photo Gallery. There are captions on the bottom of many of the photos in case your child isn't there to fill in the blanks. :-)
This week (November 29-December 3) we will attend out first of three Eagle Celebrations with the whole school. We are also wrapping up the first trimester, with report card marking on Friday, December 3rd (no school for students). This is a great time to reflect on how far your child has come since the first weeks of school. Report cards will come home on Wednesday, December 8th. Please go over the report with your child and take a moment to both celebrate their accomplishments and make goals for the upcoming trimester. |
